Faculty of Arts - Saint John

Academic Advising

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree at the UNB Saint John is intended to broaden students' understanding of themselves, their community, and the larger world. With an arts degree one attains flexibility and adaptability, both of which are important in today's fast-paced world.

In the first two years of the BA program, students are encouraged to select introductory courses from a wide range of subjects in humanities, languages, social sciences, science, business, mathematics and computer science. With these courses students lay a broad foundation on which to build later specialization. They also acquire the necessary prerequisites for more advanced courses.

In the final two years of the Bachelor of Arts Degree, students specialize in an area of their choice. Such specialization takes the form of either a major or an honours program. An honours program involves a greater degree of concentration in a subject and is recommended for students considering graduate work or professional training in a related area.

An Academic Advisor can help guide you through degree requirements, identify the important decisions in relation to your goals, point out alternatives if need be, and support you through the decision-making process. Make use of the other resources on campus to enhance your university experience such as Career Counselling, Financial Aid, Math Help Centre, Personal Counselling, Study Skills Counselling, Writing Centre, and the many student clubs and societies.
