Networked software
The French discipline offers to students and faculty alike a variety of interesting and useful software programs to enhance and assist you in your learning experience or for reference. This software is available under Courseware.

Multimedia Laboratory
The Multimedia Laboratory which is located on the third floor of Ward Chipman Library. The listed CDs are available from the circulation desk of the library for use in the Multimedia Laboratory. Other programs available on some PCs are also listed.

Networked software

Clef - Grammar practice at beginner and intermediate levels with explanations. Very user friendly. (For accents, use Function keys.)

Mots - (Presently available only in Multimedia Lab., but should be available in other labs as of September.) Vocabulary exercises. Useful also for acquiring the notion of gender. Very user friendly. (For accents, press Esc to view instructions).

Fren I - A complete program of Introductory French from McMaster University. (Information on accents available by pressing F10 twice.)

Fren II - A complete program of Intermediate French from McMaster University. (Information on accents available by pressing F10 twice.)

Fren III - (available September 1998) A complete program of Intermediate / Advanced French from McMaster University. (Information on accents available by pressing F10 twice.)

Gift - Grammar practice for beginner to intermediate levels. Developed for the Federal Government language training program.

Multimedia Laboratory

Unless otherwise indicated the CDs can be used on any computer in the laboratory. Programs marked with an asterisk require French Windows: Exit Windows to Dos; Type Winfren; load CD and click on the icon under Arts and Humanities Software. Please note audio capability of CDs is controlled by buttons on the right-hand lower side of the PC monitor.

Students in the languages have priority in this laboratory and may book PCs #1 to #5 for one hour periods starting at 8:30 by students using language software. Reservations will be held for 15 minutes. Other users can be asked to vacate a reserved PC.

Language Programs
French Pronunciation Tutor CD. Gives a reading of the level of correctness of your pronunciation. Ask for the booklet at the front desk. Installed on PCS #4 and #5.

Parallèles - CD to accompany first-year language programs. Culturally interesting TV style reports with slow-down, repeat and dictionary options. Good for improving understanding of spoken French. Installed on all PCS.

Correcteur 101 - Works like WordPerfect. The most complete check for french composition. Installed on PC #3 (not a CD-Rom)

French Now CD. French texts with sound and colour to improve comprehension and broaden vocabulary. Installed on PC #5 only. Look for Transparent Language icon.

Communication ƒcrite: la grammaire interactive CD. Interactive grammar and exercises.

Word processing in French

Word processing with SpellCheck can be done in French WordPerfect in the Multimedia Lab: Exit to Dos; Type Winfren; WP. You are now using the French keyboard.

Word processing in French in other computer labs: change En to Fr in small box at lower right hand corner of the screen. In WordPerfect under Tools, change language to French. You are now using the French keyboard.
