HOWL WITH THE WOLVES
THE PROGRAM:
The Howl with the Wolves Program is specifically designed to pair UNB Saint John varsity athletes with local children and youth and to encourage participation and development in sport. The program began in the fall, 2004 and was a great success. UNB Saint John has a great facility and committed varsity athletes who are dedicated to helping local children and youth become active. The UNBSJ Athletics, Recreation and Wellness Department believes that everyone must work together in order to improve this situation. By offering the Howl with the Wolves program, we are attempting to expose these young people to healthy lifestyles. This outreach program also aims to have Seawolf staff and/or athletes speak to participants about the importance of physical activity, team work, respect, dedication, self-confidence and other important life skills that can be developed through sports.
For further information on the “Howl with the Wolves” program please contact Athletics Director, Dave Munro (munro@unbsj.ca, 648-5532).
2008-9 Howl with the Wolves Events:
November 27, 2008
Howl with the Wolves once again took to the floor at the G. Forbes Elliot Athletics Centre. Students from District 6 came to learn more about basketball and practice their skills. Several Seawolves varsity players including Andrew Naismith, Jill Balser, Sarah Fowler, Pauline Waggott, Alan Rivers-Bowerman, Sophie Stackhouse, Jaret Mabey, Phil Martin, Sarah Sullivan, Sarah Trott and manager Mandi Balagot gave up part of their afternoon to be with the children. That is significant with exams only a week away. It shows their level of commitment to community activities and their willingness to give back to the sport they love.
Over 50 children took part in this clinic which continues to be very popular with the school districts. Howl with the Wolves is designed to provide children with skill instruction, encouragement, enjoyment and an opportunity to play a session-ending game during the one and a half hours of physical activity. Parents are always welcome to attend and many stay to watch the session. A special thanks goes to Greg Leland for mobilizing the children from the district.
Please checkout the pictures from this session as well.

The first Howl with the Wolves session of 2008-09 took place on a beautiful fall day at the Arthur Miller Field in Rothesay. There were 70 children from District 6 involved in 1.5 hours of instruction and games. Many parents enjoyed the fine weather as well. It was great to see all the children getting lots of physical activity.
Seawolves coaches Jason Brown and Ok Ikejiani led the session. They received a great deal of help from several Seawolves varsity players, including Saygun Aktas, Mike Cormier, Brian Peters, Brendan Kelly, Brent Belding, Jason DeMerchant, Nick Woodhouse and Alex Patriquen of the men’s team and Stephanie Doucette, Lindsay Millett and Hettie Lubbers from the women’s team.
The most exciting thing about these sessions is watching the varsity Seawolves give of their time and be positive role models on the children. They are really making a difference and need to be commended for their efforts today.
Several other events are in the works including more Howl with the Wolves sessions and clinics at Hazen White St. Francis School as part of the PALS partnership that has been forged between the SRC, Arts and Athletics.
