Many cultures over the course of human history have recognized the need for harmony between the environment, society and economy. What is new is an articulation of these ideas in the context of a global industrial and information society.
As we work toward sustainable international development, we must strive not to lose sight of the big picture. All too often it is easy to get caught up in our own efforts, joys and frustrations, and lose sight of the broad community of people around the world working toward the same goals. Although early environmentalists recommended that we "think globally and act locally," sustainable development challenges us to think and act both globally and locally.
