“Senate Report” Trivia Winner

We’re proud to announce yet another winner of a $10.00 “Tim’s” gift certificate. . . Tammy Hicks correctly answered our skill testing question: “According to the 2007 Senate Library Committee Report, the main level of the library will undergo major renovations in the next few months. These changes are necessary to make way for:” The answer was ( C ) new computer workstations with enhanced software capabilities. Check back next week for your chance to have coffee on us!

Exam time: With all due respect, "shut up" in the library!

The first exam will be written on Sat, Apr 14th and we know that you need a quiet place to study. So, beginning this week, we´ll be implementing our "Shut up in the library campaign" that will run through to the end of the exam period. Areas adjacent to the study carrels will be quiet (shut up) zones and we will be patrolling regularly. However, we can´t be everywhere, all of the time so we encourage you to report any conversations, cell phones, etc. to the circulation desk immediately so we can deal with it. It´s time to buckle down and Good Luck on your exams.

The LibQual+ survey is a wrap.

Over 400 UNB-SJ students, faculty and staff completed the on-line LibQual+ survey. We were thrilled by the response rate and again, thanks to all who took the time to participate. The survey results have not yet been analysed and released but we have already received your (anonymous) comments. One predominant theme raised was the excessive noise in the library. We understand your concerns and with exams right around the corner, we´ll be immediately focussing our efforts toward quieting the library down. Read on for details. . .

Does history repeat itself?

Well, that was one of the very few things that we couldn’t get an answer for when we searched America: History and Life. This extensive database contains Canadian and American historical references from prehistory to present day. America: History and Life includes around 530,000 bibliographic records, published since 1964, including dissertations, book and media reviews and all key English-language historical journals. Topics include: American studies, urban affairs, cultural, local and military history to name just a few.

Looking for European or Middle Eastern History instead? Fortunately ABC-CLIO, the publisher of America: History and Life produces a sister database, Historical Abstracts which includes all world history other than North America. So if a history project is looming, don’t forget America: History and Life or visit the WCL Reference Desk for personalized assistance.

Exam time in the Library

SHHH.JPGExams are underway and for the next two weeks, we need your cooperation to keep the noise level in the library to an absolute minimum. We will be doing frequent rounds to discourage noise and cell phone use, but please let us know if noise is keeping you from studying. During the exam period, we are filled close to capacity, and there are a lot of students in a relatively small space but if everyone does their part we can keep the library quiet. Please respect your fellow students need for quiet. Your cooperation will be appreciated!

Library Jargon (Part 2)

We have a vocabulary all our own and you've only seen the tip of the iceberg, so here comes some more. . .

Current Periodicals - These are the most recent editions of magazines or journals (i.e. periodicals), usually published within the past year, that have not been bound into volumes yet. They are filed alphabetically by title on the shelves across from the Circulation Desk.

Monograph - Typically refers to a scholarly book, or a limited set of volumes that cover one subject or a group of related subjects.

Reference Collection - This is the collection of books such as encyclopedias, dictionaries and handbooks that you can consult for bibliographic or factual information. These reference works do not circulate from the library so that they are readily available.

Hold - The request for a book that is currently checked out to another user. Placing a hold on a book places you next in line for the item when it is returned. You can request that a hold be placed on a book at the circulation desk.

Microforms - These are materials that have been photographed or filmed to a reduced size and require a special reader to use them. The microforms and microform readers are located on the second floor of the library.
