Bachelor of Science :: Economics

Prof. Jason Childs explains an economics problem

Economics is the study of how people make decisions in the face of scarcity. In examining both the strengths and pitfalls of economic theory, students will be able to improve their own choices and better predict the choices of others. Using a modern market-based economic framework, students develop an understanding of how products,consumers and governments act, how an economy as a whole operates, and how economists perform economic analysis. You will gain insight into Canadian and global economics and become familiar with analytical tools necessary to understand the wide variety of decisions people, firms and corporations make everyday.

How does it work?

In the first year of studies, you will complete the first year BSc course requirements, including first-year calculus, economics and electives. This will allow you to switch between programs with a minimum of make-up courses should you choose a different direction in your studies.

In the upper levels, you will take a variety of courses according to your interests, such as financial institutions and markets, public sector, urban and international markets.

Opportunities for economics graduates

Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Economics may find employment with government, banking and financial industries and community development. Economics graduates also find opportunities in professional programs such as journalism, law and public administration. You may also go on to graduate programs such as a Masters or Doctoral degree to study further and pursue an academic career.
