The University of New Brunswick provides scholarships to high school students with superior academic standings who are admitted to a UNB undergraduate degree program on the basis of their high school marks and who have not attended another post-secondary institution prior to coming to UNB.
Requirements
Academic achievement is a primary consideration. UNB calculates a Scholarship Average which is the Admissions Average plus bonus points for completed enriched courses. Bonus points are added directly to the Scholarship Average, as long as a mark of 75% or higher is achieved in the course.
One bonus point for 1 to 3 enriched courses
A maximum of two bonus points for 4 to 6 enriched courses
A maximum of three bonus points for 7 to 9 enriched courses
A maximum of four bonus points for 10 or more enriched courses
The Scholarship Average is not rounded. In other words, a 79.9% does not become an 80%.
Rank in class is important.
Financial need is considered for many scholarships. If financial information is not provided, you will not be considered for scholarships given to students in financial need.
Extracurricular activities are considered for a few of the larger scholarships.
Deadlines
To be considered for the larger scholarships, we encourage you to apply by March 1st. (We understand that the official high school transcript will be sent to UNB shortly thereafter.) All successful applicants will be notified by April 15th.
UNB's Scholarship Guarantee Program
Every student entering UNB directly from high school with a scholarship average of 80% is guaranteed at least $500 in scholarship support. However, the higher the scholarship average, the higher our scholarships get. Our top scholarship is $50,000. Students are notified via letter of their scholarship support at UNB which includes the scholarship guarantee (and is not in addition to).
Online Application
There are over 250 scholarships available to eligible high school students but there is ONE scholarship application form that covers all these scholarships for BOTH campuses. The scholarship application form is attached to the admission application form or, you can apply online.
In addition, there are only three scholarships which require separate application. They can be found at http://www.unb.ca/scholarships/
Responding to Offers
Please respond - we would like to know your decision. You can respond online at: http://www.unb.ca/schedules/response. All responses to our scholarship offers - acceptances or refusals - must be received by May 15th. If we don’t hear from you by May 15th, we assume that you have declined our offer.
When you accept our offer, the scholarship will be applied against your account at UNB, equally split between the Fall and Winter terms. A refund cheque is issued only when the amount of the total scholarship support exceeds the value of tuition and compulsory fees.
UNB is very fortunate to have the support of many donors. In the event that your scholarship is sponsored by a specific donor, you will be notified of the donor’s contact information. We encourage you to write a thank-you note to the donor. We know that they truly appreciate hearing from you.
