UNBSJ Bachelor of Health Sciences

What is the Bachelor of Health Sciences Program?
The Bachelor of Health Sciences is a four year degree program that integrates education and practical skills training in one of four professional streams. These include: Radiography, Respiratory Therapy, Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Therapy.

The program is delivered through institutional partnerships between the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) and other institution(s) depending upon the particular professional stream. Collectively, UNB Saint John has established formal partnerships with New Brunswick Community College - Saint John, Saint John Regional Hospital and the Moncton Hospital for the provision of didactic studies and clinical teaching for this program.

The program was developed to prepare medical technologists and therapists with the skill mixture to address changing needs in the Canadian health care system. Grounded in a year of university course work in the sciences, the two years of didactic and clinical available at partner institutions results in skilled practitioners in the field of medical technology. Through upper level course work in, for example, the social and health sciences, the practice issues are explored and contexturalized; and, critical thinking and decision-making based on evidence is further developed.

Who can apply?
Interested high school students must initially meet admission requirements for UNB Saint John’s Bachelor of Science degree and upon successful completion of the first year courses of the General Science program (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Calculus and Psychology), students are eligible to apply for acceptance into one of the Bachelor of Health Sciences professional streams.

Current UNB students who are pursuing or have successfully completed, the above first year courses, are eligible to apply for admission into one of the four professional streams.

Graduates from an Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) recognized university who have successfuly completed the first year of a BSc degree, hold a diploma from and accredited program and are eligible to practice in an area of health sciences offered through the BHS, may apply for credit towards a Post-Diploma BHS degree program.

When can I apply?
Applications for a professional stream of the BHS are submitted through the office of the Health Science Administrator, UNB Saint John, Ganong Hall 230, early in the Winter term of the first year of the BSc program. Acceptances will be issued by the partner programs near the end of March for program start in September. The number of seats available for the various professional streams are limited and very competitive.
