Radiography - (Saint John & Moncton)
Radiography is the specialty involving the safe use of x-rays in the diagnosis and treatment of injury and disease. The technologist assesses the patient’s condition, positions the patient to image body structures, operates x-ray equipment, prepares and administers contrast media and evaluates the image to determine diagnostic quality.

On any given day, a Radiologic Technologist professional may be responsible for:

  • assessing the patient’s condition and obtaining clinical history;
  • monitoring and providing care to the patient during the procedure;
  • positioning the patient and equipment correctly, or modifying the exam based on the patient’s physical and pathological condition;
  • determining technical parameters for production of images;
  • assessing acquired images for proper positioning, pathology and quality;
  • working with the radiologist and cooperating with all members of the health care team;
  • ensuring that the patient, all staff and visitors are protected from radiation;
  • contributing to patient education;
  • performing examinations in the Diagnostic Imaging Department as well as in the operating room and with a mobile unit;
  • performing intravenous injections of contrast media.

What Are Students Saying About Radiography?

"I chose a Science degree after graduating from high school and then became interested in health care but was not interested in nursing. My science background opened the door to radiological technology. I really like the program because of
the hands-on clinical experience as well as the strong theoretical background. It is a field that offers many opportunities for advancement, there is a high demand for technologists, therefore allowing for travel worldwide. It is nice to be in a profession where employment after graduation is guaranteed. With a BHS I have the opportunity to work in other countries."
Jennifer Knight BHS (Radiography), Class of '03

"After graduation from UNB Saint John with a Science degree and doing some research, Medical Radiation Technology struck my interest. The best thing about the program was the direct hands-on experience during the clinical training. I’ve just recently graduated and am now working at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Being out working I’ve realized the many possible opportunities in this career."
Tara Geikie, BSc, RTR, Class of '02

Looking to the Future
Employment opportunities in the dynamic field of general radiography are excellent. New imaging modalities not only ensure better diagnosis, they also allow technologists to perform many therapeutic procedures in a more expanded role in the health care of patients.

As advances continue to occur in this ever-changing technology, there is opportunity for employment with continued professional development in imaging modalities such as Computer Tomography, Interventional Radiography, Magnetic Resonance, Mammography, UtraSound, administration, teaching and research.

UNB Saint John offers the Radiography stream in partnership with the South-East Regional Health Authority in Moncton and the Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation in Saint John.
