Dr. Christopher Baker - Innovatia Research Chair / Associate Professor

Dr. Baker joined the UNB Saint John faculty in 2008. His areas of expertise include semantic web technologies, ontology, text mining and bioinformatics.

Previous to his appointment as Innovatia Research Chair, Dr. Baker was head of the Semantic Technology Group in the Data Mining Department, Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R Singapore), where his team developed knowledge navigation infrastructure based on semantic technologies. He has been widely published on the subject of the semantic web and was co-editor of the book Semantic Web: Revolutionizing Knowledge Discovery in the Life Sciences. He is also the former Bioinformatics Project Manager of Fungal Web at Concordia University, Canada where his team won the Semantic Web Challenge (2nd prize) in 2005 at the International Semantic Web Conference.

His prior appointments include Group Leader of In Silico Discovery at Ecopia Bio Sciences (now Thallion Pharmaceuticals Inc.), Montreal and post doctoral research at Iogen Corporation, Ottawa and the University of Toronto. He has served as editor for the journals Cancer Informatics, BMC Bioinformatics and the Journal of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology.
