Welcome to Counselling Services
University is an exciting and remarkable time of life. It is also a challenging period of new places, faces, and routines. Students may experience stress due to the adjustments required by their studies and the multiple roles in their lives. Common issues students identify are feeling worried, anxious or depressed, having relationship problems or underachievement in their studies. Counselling is available for supportive or problem-solving assistance for academic, career, emotional, personal, or social concerns. The counsellors, Meredith Henry and Holly Moore, will help explore these issues and assist students to work toward achieving the goals they have set for themselves.
The counsellors' primary goal is to facilitate the personal, social, academic, and career development of our university students. To do this, the following free, confidential services are provided:
- Personal Counselling – The counsellors are available to provide supportive and problem-solving assistance for emotional difficulties, interpersonal problems, or stressful life situations. Some students find that an initial meeting or two is all they need to explore and clarify their feelings.
- Career Counselling – Career planning and counselling are available. Testing and assessment of interests, abilities, and personality are available as well. Many students have questions or confusion about this issue and find that one or two meetings will help them find their path.
- Consultation and Referrals – In addition to providing direct services to students, the counsellors are available to consult with faculty and staff about concerns that pertain to the welfare of students. Faculty and staff are invited to call the counsellors for consultation. If one of the counsellors is not available, you can leave a message on their voice mail system or send them an e-mail. They strive to return all calls in a timely manner. They can also provide referrals to outside services and community groups to help students.
- Please read the Faculty and Staff Guide to Helping Students for more information.
- Outreach Programming - The counsellors may be available to provide activities or educational workshops for various groups (e.g., students organizations, residence communities, classes, faculty and staff, etc.) on a variety of topics (e.g., stress management, anxiety, time management, etc.). Please contact the counsellors if you are thinking about offering such a program to discuss possible times and dates that will work.
