financial aid - Emergency Funding
If you find yourself struggling financially throughout the year, come and see me. Together, we can figure out a solution to your financial woes!
In times of trouble, there are two types of emergency funding which you may qualify for:
- Emergency Loans: Emergency loans are available to all students - full-time, part-time and International. These small interest loans range from $100 - $500 and are available throughout the academic year.
- Emergency Bursaries: There are small bursaries for students in dire financial need. Please complete this form and return to my office, OH G15.
- UNB Small Loans (or Magee Loans): in order to qualify for this type of loan, you
must be full-time, Canadian and in good academic standing (min gpa of 2.0).
Unfortunately, part-time and International students are not eligible. These
loans, available during second term only, are small interest loans and
can be up to $800. UNB Small Loans are short-term and are to be repaid
by September of the following academic year. Deadline
for application is January 31 of each year . Loans will not be released until mid February.
- City Bus Tokens: UNB Saint John's Students' Representative Council provides bus tokens to students in need. See Renea Sleep (Financial Aid Officer) or Meredith Henry (Counsellor), both on the ground floor of Oland Hall.
- Sobeys Gift Certificates: UNB Saint John's Students' Representative Council, provides funding each term to buy Sobeys gift certificates. If you, or someone you know, is experiencing difficulty buying groceries, please see Renea Sleep or Meredith Henry, on the ground floor of Oland Hall.
Before being approved for either of the loans or the bursary, you must first complete the application form and then meet with Renea Sleep for an interview to determine your need. You can pick up an application form from me or download the application by clicking on the type of funding you are applying for (above). It is important that you then call - 648-5765 - or email Renea - to set up an appointment for an interview.
